Art Camp 2012

Calendar

Each one-week session features a lively conversation about the life and work of a recognized woman artist. Her work inspires our campers' imaginations as they experiment with drawing, painting, sewing, and mixed media.

Pleiades' Palette is taught by Laura Raboff and Janet Lipkin, professional artists and art teachers.

Session 1 - Buckets of Color

June 18 – 22, 9:00 – 3:00

Beverly Buchanan is a soulful artist who explores her Southern roots in her art. Houses pop up in colorful canvases and mixed media sculptures. With tin, wood and surprise materials campers will build a village of houses and make an artistic garment, a sewn doll, pastel drawings and lively paintings.

Session 2 - Passionate Brush Meets Painterly Pets

June 25 – 29, 9:00 – 3:00

Joan Brown was an expressive painter and sculptor. Her main subject was herself in everyday life. She loved her pets and animals frequented her work. Campers will paint mirrors and luscious surfaces with thick and thin paint and an abundance of collage materials. They will sew and wrap cloth animals with fuzzy, sleek and shiny fabrics.

Session 3 - Cozy quilts & Jazzy paint

July 2 – 6
(NOTE TIME: M-F 9:00 – 4:30, but no camp on Wednesday July 4)

Faith Ringgold is a spirited artist who makes mixed media story quilts and 3-D constructions. Her love of jazz and African art inspired her improvisational works. Children will create a soft sculptural doll and a unique textile influenced by African designs. They will also sew and paint a miniature quilt.

Session 4 - Dancing Poems & Enchanted Dresses

July 9 – 13, 9:00 - 3:00

Lesley Dill is a powerful artist who works in many media from printmaking to installation. She loves clothes, words and poetry and with these forms creates magical dresses. Children will make an etching, run it through the press and transform the print into a novel doll. They will alter cloth and paper surfaces with unusual techniques.
